Tattoo aftercare
Know the basics.
- Avoid Animals: Keep your healing tattoo away from pets and animals to prevent contamination.
- No Swimming: Do not swim in pools, the sea, or take long baths until your tattoo is fully healed to avoid introducing bacteria. Quick showers are fine.
- Stay Dry and Clean: Gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap. Pat it dry with a clean towel—never rub dry.
- Aftercare Cream: Use only a small amount of aftercare cream. If you can see the cream on your skin, you’ve applied too much. Overusing cream can clog pores and slow the healing process.
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight while it heals, as UV rays can damage the skin and fade the ink.
- Do Not Pick or Scratch: Resist the urge to pick at scabs or scratch itchy areas. Doing so can cause scarring and patchy healing.
- Wear Loose Clothing: Avoid tight or abrasive clothing over your tattoo to minimise irritation and allow the skin to breathe.
- Keep Everything Clean: Ensure that anything that comes into contact with your fresh tattoo is clean, including your hands, bed linen, clothing, and towels. Dirty items can introduce bacteria and cause infections.
- No New Tattoos or Piercings: Wait until your current tattoo is fully healed before getting another tattoo or piercing. This reduces strain on your body and minimises the risk of infections.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy diet and getting plenty of sleep can significantly aid your body’s natural healing process. Staying hydrated is also key.
- Injuries Can Impact Healing: Avoid any injuries or activities that may impact the tattooed area, as they can delay healing or lead to complications. If your tattoo is hit, scratched, or grazed during the healing process, this may result in disfigurement or uneven healing, affecting the final appearance. Handle your tattooed skin with extra care.
- Healing Timeline: Most tattoos will heal within two weeks, but some may take longer depending on the size, placement, and individual healing factors. Be patient and follow the aftercare instructions until fully healed.
- Healing Variations: Certain colours, such as white and lighter shades, may take longer to heal than darker colours. Similarly, some areas of your tattoo may heal faster than others due to differences in skin type or tattoo placement. Be mindful of these variations and continue aftercare for the entire tattoo until all areas are healed.
- Monitor for Infections: Keep an eye on your tattoo for redness, swelling, or unusual discharge. If these symptoms persist, consult your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.
- Don’t Hesitate to Ask: If you have any concerns about the healing of your tattoo, visit your tattoo artist—they won’t bite! Your artist is there to provide guidance and ensure your tattoo heals beautifully.
Product Recommendations
- Second-Skin Option: We recommend using Legacy Peel, a high-quality second-skin product, unless you have allergies to plasters or adhesives. This helps protect your tattoo in the first few days and reduces the risk of infection.
- Aftercare Cream: For moisturising, we suggest After Inked—a gentle, fragrance-free cream designed for tattoo aftercare.
Additional Tips
Avoid strenuous activities or workouts that might cause excessive sweating around the tattoo area during the initial healing phase.
